SEO vs GEO vs AEO: What They Mean and How to Do All Three

Plain-English guide to SEO, GEO and AEO: how they differ, what overlaps, and a practical checklist to be found on Google and cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO shapes content so it can be used as a direct answer, such as a featured snippet or voice answer. GEO makes your content clear and trustworthy enough that AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite it. They share most of their foundations, so you do not need three separate strategies.

What they have in common

Useful content that answers a real question, a site search engines can crawl and understand, clear information about who you are, and signals that others trust you. Google's guidance for AI features is the same as for search: create helpful content for people, and make sure it is indexable. There is no secret markup that guarantees inclusion.

A practical checklist

  1. Make pages crawlable and fast. Fix indexing, redirects, sitemaps and Core Web Vitals. See how Google Search works.
  2. Answer the question first. Put a direct two-sentence answer at the top, then the detail.
  3. Use clear headings and FAQs. Phrase headings as the questions people ask and keep answers self-contained.
  4. Add structured data. Organization, Service, Article and FAQ schema that matches visible content.
  5. Be consistent about your entity. Same business name, address, services and author details everywhere.
  6. Allow AI crawlers you want. Check robots.txt for crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. An llms.txt file is optional and Google does not use it, but some AI tools may read it.
  7. State facts you can stand behind. Dates, numbers with sources, and honest limits are more quotable than hype.
  8. Measure. Track Search Console data and regularly test the questions your buyers ask AI tools. Our Search Console guide is the place to start.

What not to expect

No one can guarantee rankings or AI citations. AI answers vary by question, user and day, so treat citations as something to monitor and improve, not a fixed result. If an agency promises otherwise, read our guide on hiring an SEO expert and compare options in TheSuper30 alternatives.

Questions, answered

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answers draw on content that search systems can already find and trust, so strong SEO supports GEO.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization: writing and structuring content so a search or voice system can lift a short, direct answer from it.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. Google says it does not use it for Search, but a clear llms.txt can help other AI tools find your key pages. It costs little to add.

Can I rank in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

You can make your content easy to find and cite, but you cannot buy or guarantee a place. Monitor the questions that matter to your business and improve the pages that should answer them.

How long does GEO take?

It follows the same timeline as SEO: technical fixes can help within weeks, while authority and citations usually build over months.
