WhatsApp Business API pricing has three parts: the per-message charges set by WhatsApp, your provider's platform or subscription fee, and any setup or development cost. The WhatsApp message rates and categories change, so use the current rate card from Meta or your provider rather than a number from an old article.
We deliberately do not print a price table here. Rates are revised and an outdated table is worse than none.
The three cost layers
| Layer | What it is | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Message charges | A fee when you send certain categories of message | WhatsApp (Meta), passed on by your provider |
| Provider fee | Subscription for the platform, inbox, chatbot builder or API access | The provider |
| Build and set-up | Flows, integrations, CRM connection, templates | You or your developer |
How message charges work, in plain terms
- Messages are grouped into categories, such as marketing, utility, authentication and service conversations.
- When a customer messages you first, you can generally reply freely for a limited window afterwards.
- To message someone outside that window, you generally need an approved template, and the category of the template affects the charge.
- Rules about which messages are free have changed over time. Always check the current policy.
What providers charge for
Providers differ. Some charge a monthly subscription per account or per user, some add a mark-up on message charges, and some include a chatbot builder or shared inbox. Compare the total cost at your expected volume, not the headline monthly fee.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Do you pass on WhatsApp's message charges at cost or add a mark-up?
- What is included in the monthly fee: inbox users, chatbot builder, API access?
- Are there set-up or verification fees?
- How are template approvals handled and how fast?
- Can I export my contacts and chat history if I leave?
- What happens to my number if I switch providers?
Estimate your own cost
Count monthly conversations you expect, split them into customer-started and business-started, and ask for a written quote at that volume. Then add build cost for flows and CRM integration.
When you do not need the API
If a few people answer a few chats a day, the free WhatsApp Business app and a click-to-chat link are enough. See API vs Business app.
If you want a chatbot built on the official platform with CRM hand-off, see our WhatsApp chatbot development service. We scope it in writing, and check current WhatsApp pricing with you before you commit.
